Throughout this month, I'll be travelling with the Women's Foundation of Oregon around the state to hear and document the concerns of women and girls in side the story booth/WFO RV! Their goal is to create a report on the state of women and girls. I was really surprised to find out that no such thing exists already and it makes me that much more excited about being part of the tour. Later in the year, I'll help create a series of ten videos that highlight critical concerns and issues.
Last week we were in Newport and Bend. This week we're in Central and Southern Oregon. Later in the month it's Umatilla and Eastern Oregon. It's really an honor to sit with women in the booth and just listen as they share their stories. Looking forward to more and to the full report which will come out later this year.
While I'm out in the RV, WFO staff, led by Emily Evans, creates opportunities for women to record and give feedback in small groups. Here are some photos I took from the same event in Newport.

I'm loving my job as I am heading out to construction sites all around time to document the tradeswomen building our city. Above, laborer Vanessa Enos out at Nike.

Last Friday, I went out on the first of several shoots for Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. to document tradeswomen for every apprenticeable construction trade. We started with Val Black, pictured above and moved on to cement mason, Olivia McKavery, but we also ran into two former students of mine, Kadence Jimenez and Johnetta Abraham! And then I saw Guillermo from a recent video for Portland Youthbuilders!
Sometimes I miss being out on a big jobsite as a carpenter even though that was now, a very long time ago. No need for me when you have young whippersnappers like Val Black on the job!

This is fun. A photo I took of Anjanet Banuelos, a Union Laborer, is featured in the Building and Wood Workers' International Calendar! She's the month of May, but other months feature lady trades workers from all around the world including India, Argentina, Jamaica, Sweden and more. Go here to learn more about how the calendar was made to promote gender employment equality!

Hearts+Sparks has a few projects on the docket including a series of photos and videos for the PUSH young worker safety training through OHSU. It's a large project with multiple shoots and pieces, but incredibly fun to get out in the community for a good cause.
Here are some more pics of various images designed for the training.

Last Wednesday I got to hang with two of my favorite clients/friends, Gabe Rosen and Kina Voelz of Biwa restaurant. I roamed around for a couple of hours working through a shotlist and capturing a sense of the place which was great fun, but really nice to actually dine and have a drink with them afterward!

A quick pic from today's video shoot for NW Line JATC and their forthcoming video about the Tree Trimmer Apprenticeship. This is Becki Yanosko on the job, cutting trees for clearance around power lines. Pretty tough, eh?

So Hearts+Sparks has been busy for the past couple of weeks churning out images for the Bureau of Labor's upcoming nutrition training for apprentices. The online training will feature both photo video and will be required by all incoming apprentices. It's been fun interviewing workers at various jobsites and getting them to talk about what may seem an unlikely topic for construction folk, but eating right definitely makes a difference with such physical work.
Here's one of the memes they asked me to create. I photographed a cement mason foreman working out at the new water reservoir in SE and put this together.

Last week I went out on the new transit bridge and interviewed and photographed two Journey Laborers on the job. One of them, Anjanet Banuelos was a student of mine when I taught at Oregon Tradeswomen so it was particularly fun to see her doing her thing.
For the project, the Oregon Southern Idaho Laborers Apprenticeship hired me to do short profiles with a really quick turnaround as they are looking to get the word out about their openings right now.

As former training manager over at Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. I taught Kennitha Lomax in class about the rigors of working in construction. Last week, I got hired to go out on the jobsite and photograph her for the NECA/IBEW Electrical Training Center's poster series and for Oregon Tradeswomen's upcoming bus ads. Incredibly fun to see Kennitha as a badass electrical apprentice on the job, doing her thing and loving it. Here's a pic from the shoot as she drills into a wall (above). And a picture of us with my phone as well (below).

I've been working on a poster series for the NECA/IBEW Electrican Training Center and yesterday got to see some of the finished photographs and posters up on their wall. I really love how they are highlighting the work of their own members at various stages in their progression as electricians. Cool project to get them meet them all!

Hiked up to Mt. Hood last weekend and snapped this photo from the top of Tom Dick and Harry Mountain. The Great Northwest indeed!

Hearts+Sparks was out at Camp Rilea, NW Line JATC's lineworker training center south of Astoria, OR, interviewing lineworkers about their job. It's amazing to see them climbing poles and hanging in the air like it's nothing. The weather was sunny and beautiful and I snapped a couple of pics while setting up the camera.

Hearts+Sparks was out in Sandy, Oregon this past week to interview an apprentice electrician for the NECA/IBEW Electrical Training Center. The shoot is part of a larger video intended to show the tough working conditions apprentices often face on the job, but when we got there, despite a rainy forecast, it was beautiful. Made for some great images though...kinda makes you want to be an electrician to have such a dreamy jobsite, huh?
